Social Boycott Declared Against Inter-Caste Couples in Ratlam; Police Intervene
In a village in Ratlam district, Madhya Pradesh, a decree of social boycott against couples who have entered into love marriages has sparked controversy. Following the viral circulation of a video documenting this open decree, the police have taken action, imposing prohibitory measures against six villagers due to apprehensions of a breach of peace. The administration has signaled a firm stance against such social diktats. The incident, occurring in Pancheva village, approximately 50 kilometers from Ratlam district headquarters, saw village elders announce on January 23rd that individuals eloping for love marriages and their families would face social ostracism. Furthermore, anyone assisting such couples would also be subjected to the same penalty. A video of this pronouncement, showing an individual addressing villagers, has gained traction on social media. The decree included exclusion from social events, denial of employment opportunities, and even the cessation of daily necessities like milk supply. Upon the video's emergence, law enforcement acted swiftly. Ratlam Superintendent of Police Amit Kumar confirmed that based on the video evidence, six villagers have been 'bound over,' meaning they have been legally obligated to maintain peace and refrain from similar activities. A complaint from an affected family in Pancheva village has been forwarded to the relevant police station, with instructions issued for legal proceedings. The administration emphasized that violations of any citizen's fundamental rights will not be tolerated. In collaboration with the Department of Social Justice, the police and district administration are organizing dialogue sessions in the village to educate residents about law, the constitution, and individual freedoms. Officials have assured that strict monitoring will be in place to prevent the recurrence of such incidents in the future.
