Indore Water Contamination Leads to Fatalities, Disputed Death Toll Sparks Public Outcry
A severe water contamination crisis in Indore's Bhagirathpura area has resulted in fatalities, with local residents and authorities clashing over the number of deaths. Following the demise of a 62-year-old man, residents claim 29 deaths in a month due to contaminated drinking water spreading diarrhea. The state government, in a death audit report submitted to the Madhya Pradesh High Court, suggested that 16 deaths in Bhagirathpura may be linked to water-related health issues. The victim's family alleges that their father died due to a lack of timely medical attention and ambulance services. The High Court has constituted a one-member commission, headed by former judge Justice Sushil Kumar Gupta, to conduct a judicial inquiry into the matter, with a directive to submit an interim report within four weeks. The outbreak of vomiting and diarrhea began in late December after contamination was found in 51 tube wells, with E. coli bacteria identified as the cause of widespread infection. Officials attribute the contamination to leakage in the municipal water pipeline, allowing sewage to mix with the drinking water supply.
