NIA to Probe Murshidabad Violence After Migrant Worker's Death
The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has taken over the investigation into the violence that erupted in Beldanga, Murshidabad, following the suspicious death of migrant worker Alauddin Sheikh. Sheikh, a resident of Murshidabad, was found dead in his rented room in Jharkhand on January 16. While initial reports suggested suicide, his family alleges he was brutally murdered. The Ministry of Home Affairs ordered the probe, and the NIA has registered a case under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). An NIA team is scheduled to visit the incident site and the local police station to collect the case diary. The unrest in Beldanga saw large crowds blocking railway tracks and National Highway 12 for several hours in protest of Sheikh's death.
