Indore Water Contamination Tragedy Claims Another Life Amidst Official Disagreement
The contaminated water crisis in Indore's Bhagirathpura area has claimed another victim, an e-rickshaw driver, escalating tensions between residents and authorities. While the family attributes the death to the polluted water, the health department suggests cancer as the cause. The deceased, Hemant, was the sole breadwinner for his family. His brother claims Hemant's death was a direct result of drinking contaminated water, leading to illness and subsequent death within 15 days. The Chief Medical and Health Officer stated Hemant died of cardiopulmonary arrest, attributing it to his existing cancer. Reports of residents falling ill due to contaminated water began in late December, with locals complaining of inaction by the municipal corporation despite numerous grievances. Lab reports confirmed the presence of E. coli bacteria in water from 51 tube wells, with the municipal corporation citing leakage in water pipelines allowing sewage contamination. A status report submitted to the Madhya Pradesh High Court mentioned seven deaths from diarrhea and vomiting, while a death audit report suggests at least 15 deaths in Bhagirathpura may be linked to the outbreak. The administration has provided compensation to families of 21 individuals who lost their lives due to vomiting and diarrhea, including some with other ailments on humanitarian grounds. Local residents estimate the death toll from waterborne diseases to be 25, a figure not officially confirmed by municipal authorities.
