ED Raids Uncover Massive Cash Haul Amid Odisha Illegal Mining Probe

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has seized a significant amount of cash during raids linked to an illegal mining investigation in Ganjam, Odisha. The operation targeted locations associated with BJD leader and contractor Hrishikesh Padhi, uncovering cupboards filled with currency notes, sparking widespread shock. The raids, which extended to approximately 20 locations in Ganjam and several traders' residences in Berhampur, are connected to alleged tax evasion and financial irregularities. The investigation stems from evidence against at least six sand mafia members who allegedly amassed illegal wealth by obtaining leases in the names of auto and tractor owners, as well as pan and sweet shop owners. The ED is investigating illegal mining and transportation of minor minerals, following FIRs based on the use of forged documents. Previous reports by the CAG had also highlighted large-scale illegal mining along riverbeds in Ganjam, causing substantial losses to the government.
