Maharashtra Nagar Nigam Mayor Post Dispute Reaches Delhi; Lottery to Decide Reservation
Disagreements over the mayoral posts in Maharashtra's municipal corporations following recent elections have escalated to national-level discussions, with key decisions expected from Delhi. While the BJP and the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena alliance secured a majority in 23 out of 29 municipal corporations, a deadlock persists regarding the mayoral positions in Mumbai and Thane. The BJP, having emerged as the largest party in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) with 89 seats, is pushing for its candidate. Meanwhile, the Shinde faction, despite winning fewer seats, claims a right to the mayor's post, citing their role in difficult constituencies. A high-level meeting is scheduled in Delhi to resolve these disputes and finalize committee allocations. Concurrently, the reservation categories for mayoral posts across all corporations, including Mumbai, will be determined through a lottery system by the state's Urban Development Department on January 22. This lottery process, based on rotation for general, SC, ST, OBC, and women categories, was not finalized before the elections, leading to the current uncertainty. Political opposition has criticized the centralization of the Mumbai mayor's decision in Delhi, calling it an affront to Marathi pride. Similar political maneuvering is observed in other cities, with alliances shifting to secure mayoral seats.
